Abstract

In A Language of Song, Samuel Charters-one of the pioneering collectors of African American music-writes of a trip to West Africa where he found "a gathering of cultures and a continuing history that lay behind the flood of musical expression [he] encountered everywhere . . . from Brazil to Cuba, to Trinidad, to New Orleans, to the Bahamas, to dance halls of west Louisiana and the great churches of Harlem." In this book, Charters takes readers along to those and other places, including Jamaica and the Georgia Sea Islands, as he recounts experiences from a half-century spent following, documenting, recording, and writing about the Africa-influenced music of the United States, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Each of the book's fourteen chapters is a vivid rendering of a particular location that Charters visited. While music is always his focus, the book is filled with details about individuals, history, landscape, and culture. In first-person narratives, Charters relates voyages including a trip to the St. Louis home of the legendary ragtime composer Scott Joplin and the journey to West Africa, where he met a man who performed an hours-long song about the Europeans' first colonial conquests in Gambia. Throughout the book, Charters traces the persistence of African musical culture despite slavery, as well as the influence of slaves' songs on subsequent musical forms. In evocative prose, he relates a lifetime of travel and research, listening to brass bands in New Orleans; investigating the emergence of reggae, ska, and rock-steady music in Jamaica's dancehalls; and exploring the history of Afro-Cuban music through the life of the jazz musician Bebo Valdés. A Language of Song is a unique expedition led by one of music's most observant and well-traveled explorers.

Abstract

This volume presents the first direct look at the complex relationship between music and power across a range of musical genres and countries. Discourses of power in the region centre on some of the most contested social issues, most notably in relation to nationhood, gender and religion. Individual chapters examine the ways in which music serves as a forum for playing out issues of power, ideology, resistance and subversion. How does music become a space for promoting - or conversely, resisting or subverting - particular ideologies or positions of authority? How does it accrue symbolic power.

Abstract

Claudia R. Jensen presents the first unified study of musical culture in the court and church of Muscovite Russia. Spanning the period from the installation of Patriarch Iov in 1589 to the beginning of Peter the Great's reign in 1694, her book offers detailed accounts of the celebratory musical performances for Russia's first patriarch -- events that were important displays of Russian piety and power. Jensen emphasizes music's varied roles in Muscovite society and the equally varied opinions and influences surrounding it. In an attempt to demystify what has previously been an enigma to Western readers, she paints a clear picture of the dazzling splendor of musical performances and the ways in which 17th-century Muscovites employed music for spiritual enlightenment as well as entertainment.

Abstract

The book is structured around the translation of a Javanese shadow theater performance entitled Srikandhi Mbarang Lènggèr (“Srikandhi Becomes an Itinerant Dancer” or “Srikandhi Dances Lènggèr”), performed only in the Banyumas region (in west Central Java) by the locally renowned puppeteer, Ki Sugino Siswocarito. This study is a translation of the story both in a strict textual-linguistic sense and in a more general interpretive sense, providing an understanding of what the performance means to its Banyumas audience. More important, it shows how the puppeteer transforms the culturally universal traditions of Javanese ritual, shadow-puppet theater, and music to particularize the entire performance event for a local audience. The book is three things: a major conceptual study that develops, advocates, and applies an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of the performance process, an important secondary source on rural Javanese culture and arts (most works on Java focus on the court centers), and a useful primary source on wayang theater—since it includes the Javanese text and English translation of a complete story with music transcriptions provided in an appendix. The Javanese texts and their English translations are laid out side by side to facilitate reading while listening to the audio recording on the enclosed dvd. The book contains twenty-five beautifully rendered illustrations of Banyumas-style wayang puppets (major characters in the story) by two Javanese artists.

Abstract

The song books are a tangible reminder of the lively seventeenth-century song culture. Young and old, poor and rich: everyone sang, from the cradle to the grave. Natascha Veldhorst shows the diversity and originality of the genre. In addition, the book contains many surprising illustrations that underline how much singing and songbooks were integrated into daily life at the time. Songbooks were very popular with the Dutch population for a long time. The genre was invented in the 16th century, but remained popular for centuries afterward. The Golden Age in particular experienced an impressive growth, with hundreds of collections in various formats, prices and designs. The Dutch situation was unique in quantity and quality. Nowhere in Europe were songbooks produced and purchased with so much energy and enthusiasm. Singing through life is devoted to this fascinating cultural-historical phenomenon. The book elaborates on the design and content of the songbooks, the relationship between newly composed and existing music, the influence of publishers and printers, the connections between song culture and theatre, the popularity of amorous songbooks with youth, and religious resistance to the compelling influence of music. Thematic chapters alternate with twelve short interludes about separate songbooks, which show the great diversity and originality of the genre. Surprising illustrations emphasize how integrated the songbooks were in daily life. Songbooks, paintings and prints are a tangible reminder of our lively seventeenth-century song culture. Young and old, poor and rich: everyone sang, from the cradle to the grave.

Abstract

Sounds in Translation: Intersections of music, technology and society joins a growing number of publications taking up R. Murray Schafer's challenge to examine and to re-focus attention on the sound dimensions of our human environment. This book takes up his challenge to contemporary audiologists, musicologists and sound artists working within areas of music, cultural studies, media studies and social science to explore the idea of the 'soundscape' and to investigate the acoustic environment that we inhabit. It seeks to raise questions regarding the translative process of sound: 1) what happens to sound during the process of transfer and transformation; and 2) what transpires in the process of sound production/expression/performance. Sounds in Translation was conceived to take advantage of new technology and a development in book publishing, the electronic book. Much of what is written in the book is best illustrated by the sound itself, and in that sense, permits sound to 'speak for itself'.
